Saving A Heart on Valentine’s Day

February 12th, 2018

Valentine’s Day creates time and space to reflect on those that we love. We are taking one more step towards love and compassion this year. This Valentine’s Day, we are sponsoring a child to receive life-saving heart surgery. Learn more about the loving soul we sponsored below and how his outlook on life has completely transformed in the most positive way.

Background of our Involvement

Dr. Rick Hodes - Saving a Heart on Valentine's Day

Source: Rickhodes.org/about

Throughout the years, we’ve connected with Dr. Rick Hodes who is an American doctor who has dedicated nearly 30 years of his life serving the underprivileged in Ethiopia. Dr. Rick Hodes is a CNN Hero and JDC’s Medical Director. Dr. Rick Hodes mainly treats spine, cardiac, and cancer patients. We’ve been privileged enough to donate over the years to give back and help save lives through Dr. Rick Hodes’ work. Dr. Rick Hodes sends his patients from the Mother Teresa Clinic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to either India for cardiac surgery or to Ghana for spinal surgery. In India, heart surgery is about 10% of the price in the United States.

Samson - Saving a Heart on Valentine's Day

Whoever Saves a Life, Saves the World

Samson, pictured above, is the boy we sponsored to receive a life-saving heart surgery. He arrived in Dr. Rick Hodes’ care at age 10 from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He was born in Wello province, however his dad, a policeman, was transferred to Addis Ababa. When Samson arrived to the clinic, he was tired and weak. Samson was diagnosed as having a ventricular septal defect (VSD). VSD is a hole between the 2 ventricles of the heart. Untreated, it would lead to death. In Samson’s case, the blood flow between the 2 ventricles was revering and going from left to right (expected) to both directions (which is not supposed to happen). This would soon become irreversible. He needed corrective surgery as soon as possible. Dr. Rick Hodes put him on Viagra 3x daily to lower his pressures, and the shunt reverted to left-to-right. This gave a window of surgical opportunity.

Samson was sent to India, along with a dozen other heart patients. Samson underwent surgery to repair his heart at AIMS Amrita Hospital in Kochi, India. The surgery went well and he returned to Ethiopia after his recovery. Samson is now going to school and playing with his friends. Samson would love to play soccer and become an engineer when he grows up.

How Can You Help this Valentine’s Day?

A Time For Heroes - Space 2

This Galactic Universe Room was out of this world! Our Space Backdrop adorned the wall and set the stage for this intergalactic experience. This room was full of fun and unique arts and crafts stations. The kids could choose between making their own slime, being transformed into Aliens with funky makeup, or decorating mini Space pumpkins. To top it off, the room was filled with Space-themed music and dancing. What a space-y time!

From Space to taking a road trip! Take a drive on this highway in the stunning Tesla below. The smaller Tesla replicas were driven around a race track by eager and excited kids. The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation (EGPAF) has quickly become one of our favorite organizations with an incredible annual event that raises awareness for pediatric aids.  The EGPAF annual event, ‘A Time for Heroes’ Family Festival  was filled with fun, games, and celebrity heroes. Some good old fashioned face painted was also involved. This incredibly meaningful event was held at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, CA. We love giving back to a great cause. With the event being so close to Halloween, it was so much fun to be a part of this Mad Science area of the event. Our Lab Interior backdrop was featured as the background to an exciting plethora of activities. The skeleton below was quite the complement to our hand-painted backdrop. This part of the event was completely transformed into an spooky interior of a laboratory. Kids and adults alike had so much fun at this remarkable event.

We had the privilege of being a sponsor for the #SafeKidsDay event in Los Angeles. This charity fundraiser created by Simply Troy was a star-studded event to raise awareness for Safe Kids Worldwide. Safe Kids Worldwide is, “a global organization dedicated to preventing injuries in children, the number one killer of kids in the United States.” We were honored to provide our hand-painted backdrops for the event.

The basketball event at the #SafeKidsDay Event was SO much fun. Our Spectator backdrop let everyone feel as if they were center stage for their NBA Playoff debut. The stadium is packed and the crowd is cheering! All of the spectators are vying for a picture of their favorite players. The basketball event created an opportunity for all of the attendees to feel like a professional athlete for a day. We love how it turned out.

We had the honor of being involved in the Love Benefit on June 2nd at the Morgan Run Resort and Club in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. It’s always a pleasure for us to give back to the community, especially when it affects someone so near and dear to the Backdrops Beautiful family. We were among 150 companies that came together to show our love and support for Aaron Feldman, CEO and Founder of True Photography. Aaron is a true visionary and has made a strong impact on our industry and our community, which was evident by the attendance and support at this amazing event.

0426Love_Benefit

We had such an incredible night being apart of this event, full of libations, delectable cuisine, a silent auction, opportunity drawings, games and live entertainment. It was so special for us to witness our Beatles 7 backdrop as a main element to the night’s festivities and it was so wonderful to see so many people that care so much about Aaron.

0366Love_Benefit

Everything really came full circle for us as our Director of Sales and Marketing, Jonathan Goldstone, used True Photography to document one of the most important days in his life – his wedding. We jumped at the chance to be apart of this event as we viewed it as an opportunity to truly thank and give back to Aaron and his company for all that they did in capturing Jonathan’s wedding. It is incredible how connected all of us are and using our community as a place to give back is essential in facilitating a loving and supportive network.

All proceeds from the event went towards Aaron Feldman’s recovery and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Follow his journey at http://howibeatmycancer.com/. Thank you Aaron for letting us be apart of this meaningful event and thank you to True Photography for these gorgeous photos.

Once again Backdrops Beautiful participated in the Holy Cross Mothers Guild Fashion Show & Luncheon on April 27, 2013 by donating a backdrop to their event.  We donated our London Skyline 2 Backdrop.  This years theme was A Knight in London.

They are a group of mothers at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, CA that raise scholarship funds for students who have lost a parent.  It is a very worthy cause that we are privileged to participate in.
